Maruti Suzukis position in manufacturing compact cars is well known. With this popularity and expertise, this company launched its Swift hatchback in early 2005 and it became a prominent player in the premium hatchback segment. The Swift just shattered all the records and emerged as one of the best selling hatchbacks in the Indian automotive scene. But the car was showing its age and had to compete with new contenders in the market with better styling, handling and loads of new features. The engineers however, did not want to sacrifice the peppiness the old Swift packed and indeed, this new one has lost none of it. The Swift is available in 7 variants, 4 petrol ones and 3 diesel ones. The choice of colours for the Maruti Suzuki Swift includes Mysterious Violet, Glistening Grey, Fire Red, Silky Silver, Pearl Arctic White and Granite Grey.
The new Maruti Suzuki Swift is available in both petrol and diesel versions. The petrol variants of the Swift are powered by a 1.2 litre engine that pumps out 83 bhp while the diesel variants are powered by the same 1.3 litre motor which delivers 74 bhp. Both the engines are coupled to a 5 speed manual transmission. The improved fuel efficiency of the petrol engine now stands at an ARAI-certified 20.4 kpl, just under 10% more than the outgoing model. The diesel-powered Swift now boasts of an impressive fuel efficiency of 25.2 kmpl, a full 10% more than its predecessor. The Swift has McPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear, which ensures a comfortable ride quality. The steering still does not return as much feedback as we would like and the car does not give a lot of confidence at high speeds, but it is a definite improvement over the previous version which, undoubtedly, was already one of the best in its class.
The new Swift remains almost identical to the older one but Maruti Suzuki has given it some new styling elements that make it stand apart from the previous models. The honeycomb grille at the front has been slightly restyled and the front bumper gets a bigger airdam. The foglights have boomerang-shaped silver accents around them. The car also gets a new and better looking set of alloy wheels. But apart from these subtle differences, the company hasnbt messed around in the styling department. See one of these cars on the road and nobody will mistake it for anything else. The Swift’s interiors are very contemporary with black interiors with chrome accents. The ergonomics are good and everything has a trendy look. The new model gets an audio system with bluetooth support, rear view mirrors that can be folded electrically and push button engine ignition. This base version of this car also gets all those features that are pretty much standard nowadays like a parcel tray, lane change indicator, fuel consumption display, tilt steering, low fuel warning lamp, headlight on reminder, key-in-slot reminder, seat belt reminder, power steering and body coloured bumpers. In addition to the above, the top end variants get electric ORVMs with indicators, keyless entry, power windows all around, front and rear fog lamps, body coloured ORVMs and door handles, alloy wheels, a height-adjustable driver seat, rear wiper-washer and defogger, steering mounted controls and a 6 speaker audio system with bluetooth connectivity.
Safety wise, Maruti Suzuki has given the Swift all the usual options. There are airbags for both the front occupants, ABS with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), an engine immobilizer, front and rear fog lamps, rear parking sensors, a six layer polymer-based fuel tank and so on.
